Former President Barack Obama challenged the White House on Wednesday over its reaction to a joke about the building's interior. Obama argued that the administration focused on a quip about cheesecake rather than the economic data he presented. He said the White House ignored his points on rising prices and tariffs. Instead, officials launched a multi-day response to the comparison with a Cheesecake Factory.
The dispute began on Saturday. Obama spoke at a rally and described the White House's gold embellishments. He said the decor made the building look like a Cheesecake Factory opened by Saddam Hussein. The comment drew immediate attention from the current administration. Republicans on social media joined the criticism of the former President.
On Monday, President Trump defended the renovation work. He stated that he fixed the building with the finest artisans in the world. He noted the property was in horrible shape before the changes. That same day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited a local Cheesecake Factory. Bessent praised the establishment to reporters. He is the official tasked with managing the federal budget and interest rates.
Obama addressed the visit during a rally in Morrow, Georgia, on Wednesday. He pointed out the timing of the trip. He joked that the Treasury head should have held a press conference in front of the restaurant. Obama said the President was not upset by the Saddam Hussein reference. The President took great umbrage with the Cheesecake Factory line specifically. The administration mobilized a whole-of-government response to the joke.
Obama said the administration did not dispute his claims about inflation. He stated they did not deny that tariffs contributed to higher costs for families. He accused the administration of engaging in high levels of corruption. He said officials remained silent on those factual points. They focused their energy on the joke about the restaurant.
Conservative commentators also weighed in on the exchange. Scott Jennings, a CNN host, wrote on X that Obama had never been to a Cheesecake Factory. Jennings described the comment as condescending to regular folks. Obama rejected that characterization on Wednesday. He said he was a longtime patron of the eatery. He noted that he and his two daughters frequently dined there for about a decade.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest remarks. The Treasury visit occurred one day after the President's initial defense of the decor. Obama's rally in Georgia drew attention to the specific details of the White House's internal response. The former President used the incident to question the administration's priorities on economic messaging.
