The No. 17 Florida Gators dropped their fifth consecutive game against No. 3 Georgia on Saturday, falling 27-8 in a match held in Atlanta. This contest marked the first time the rivals have met outside of Jacksonville since 1995.
The Gators offense stalled for three quarters, failing to record a touchdown until the final period. The team committed four turnovers and suffered costly penalties throughout the contest. These defensive lapses allowed the Bulldogs to control the pace of the game and maintain a comfortable lead.
Aaron Philo started at quarterback but was removed after the first half. He completed two of seven passes for 24 yards and threw two interceptions. Tramell Jones Jr. took over the duties and completed 17 of 24 passes for 172 yards. He also threw one interception and rushed for the Gators' only score, a two-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Florida defense generated pressure that led to several short drives for the visitors. DJ Coleman forced a fumble that Myles Graham recovered and returned 42 yards. That play set up the scoring drive that produced the Gators' sole touchdown.
Head Coach Jon Sumrall declined to name a permanent starter following the loss. He stated that he would evaluate both quarterbacks over the next few days to see who earns more reps with the first team. Sumrall noted that neither player performed well enough to secure the starting job permanently, but both showed enough promise to remain in the rotation.
Sumrall emphasized that the program needs to improve in every area to build a sustainable team. He acknowledged growth on the defensive unit but stated it was not yet good enough. Receiver Bailey Stockton said the team must return to the drawing board and focus solely on the upcoming nine-and-three stretch of the schedule.
