OpenAI appears to be opting for one more massive infusion of private capital instead of rushing toward a public stock offering. According to sources speaking with CNBC, the artificial intelligence lab is currently negotiating to raise up to $30 billion in new funding. This round would establish a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, a figure that would position the company as the most highly valued private business in history if finalized.
The financing is being spearheaded by Coatue alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates. While discussions regarding the specific terms remain ongoing and could shift, reports from both CNBC and Bloomberg suggest that the deal is taking shape. Bloomberg had previously noted a month prior that the lab was working on a $30 billion raise, though it cited a $1.4 trillion valuation for that specific figure. The involvement of capital from the UAE might also be linked to a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from that region, CNBC reports. OpenAI has declined to comment on the negotiations.
This potential injection of capital would significantly alter the financial landscape for the company ahead of its planned initial public offering. OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a funding round in March that valued the maker of ChatGPT at $852 billion post-money. Should this new round secure a valuation exceeding $1 trillion, it would set a record for the most valuable private company ever. Furthermore, reaching such a high valuation would raise the bar considerably for the company's eventual public debut.
The financial maneuvering at OpenAI could also have ripple effects regarding its main competitor. Reports from CNBC indicate that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its own public debut. Many observers believe Anthropic's public filing is much closer to materializing, with rumors suggesting an S-1 filing could appear at any moment. Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, a transaction that was widely viewed at the time as its final major private funding round before going public. It also filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June.
The situation creates a complex dynamic between the two major AI laboratories as they prepare for the public markets. While Anthropic appears poised to file its public documents imminently, OpenAI is seemingly focused on bolstering its private valuation first. The outcome of these negotiations regarding the $30 billion raise and the associated valuation remains the central point of uncertainty for the company's financial trajectory.
