Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the top military planner at the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A Pentagon official confirmed the decision late Wednesday, noting that Sylvia was accused of misconduct related to the release of classified information concerning the Iran conflict. The official stated that Sylvia failed three polygraph examinations regarding the sharing of sensitive data with the press. Consequently, the matter has been forwarded to the Department of Justice.

Sylvia held the J5 position, which oversees strategy, plans, and policy. He is the second general to lose that role under Hegseth. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire in October 2025. No successor has been named for the J5 directorate. The Joint Staff issued a statement expressing gratitude for Sylvia's 32 years of service and wishing him and his family well.

The J5 directorate coordinates military planning directly with the Joint Chiefs and the president. This personnel change occurs as President Trump considers new military actions against Iran. The president has vowed to complete the war launched eight months ago with Israel and has indicated that new strikes may follow the midterm elections. A third U.S. aircraft carrier and thousands of additional troops are currently deploying to the region.

Sylvia previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until May 2025. His official biography has since been removed from the department's website. He also served as the vice director for the J5 before his promotion. Sylvia is part of a larger group of nearly two dozen senior military leaders who have departed or been removed during Hegseth's tenure. These exits include civilian secretaries for the Army and Navy as well as top uniformed officers.

Hegseth ordered the military to double its planned cuts to top officers in September. The goal is a 20% decrease in flag and general officer positions by January 1, 2027. There are currently approximately 800 such positions. Hegseth described the reduction as a measure of accountability that was long overdue. He made this statement to junior officers and enlisted leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico on September 30.

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., criticized the reductions as a purge that will take years to reverse. Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot, stated last month that the removals are eliminating a generation of leaders and that recovery will require a generation. The Pentagon has publicly explained few of these personnel moves, leaving the rationale for many departures unclear to the public and Congress.
