The City of Alexandria has launched a group purchasing initiative that lowers the cost of installing renewable energy systems. Through this partnership, residents can secure discounted prices for heat pump and solar equipment. The program is open to both renters and homeowners in the city.

The primary discount comes from a joint campaign with Solar United Neighbors. The city organizes a collective purchase through vetted installers. This approach reduces the price for individual participants. Registering for the program costs nothing and carries no obligation. Participants are matched with installers who have passed a rigorous vetting process.

Heat pump installations receive a 15% discount compared to standard market rates. For a typical installation, this equates to savings of approximately $2,900. Homeowners also benefit from improved indoor air quality and reduced energy bills. The system helps maintain comfort while lowering emissions.

Solar panel installations offer an average savings of $6,323 for a typical-sized system. The equipment generally pays for itself within 10 to 13 years. Participation may also increase property value and lower the environmental impact of the home. The program includes optional electric vehicle chargers and home battery storage at discounted rates.

A separate campaign called Solarize is running from April 15 through July 15. Residents can sign up for free to explore solar options for their specific homes. There is no requirement to purchase equipment during this period. The city notes that financing and lease options are available for solar additions. It encourages homeowners to review resources from the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Department of Energy before signing contracts.

The city also maintains a recognition program for residents who take sustainability actions. Participants complete an online checklist to earn points for each action. Recognized homes receive a yard sign or window cling. The city provides links to these resources on its Eco-City website, including information on electric vehicle charging locations and federal tax credits.

Residents can follow updates on social media or sign up for the environmental e-newsletter. The city uses these channels to share program news and updates. Contact information is available for those seeking direct assistance with the Eco-City Homes program.
