The anticipation surrounding the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has reached a fever pitch as the company prepares for a public listing expected to value it at as high as $2 trillion. This upcoming event promises to be a historic windfall for the venture capital community, creating a stark contrast between the modest entry points of early investors and the current astronomical valuations of the market leaders. Even before the official stock exchange debut, the private market dynamics indicate that the stakes held by key backers have already accumulated substantial wealth.
As of the latest private market valuation, which stands at $965 billion, the financial positions of several prominent investors have grown to billions of dollars. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, the disparity in entry points among these backers highlights the extraordinary growth trajectory of the company. While later-stage investors have joined at higher valuations, those who committed capital during the startup’s formative years are seeing their initial outlays multiply by orders of magnitude.
One of the most notable early participants is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. Schmidt invested in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at merely $461 million. Over the subsequent years, his position has grown to represent approximately 1% of the total company equity. At the current private valuation, this modest percentage ownership translates to a stake worth nearly $10 billion, illustrating the explosive appreciation of his initial bet.
Later-stage institutions have also secured significant gains, although their entry points were considerably higher. Iconiq, an investment outfit, issued a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This substantial late-stage investment has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double again once the initial public offering is completed, further cementing Iconiq’s status as a major beneficiary of the AI boom.
Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D funding round, has maintained a long-term commitment to Anthropic. The firm has invested more than $1 billion in the AI lab over the course of its history. Today, this accumulated investment is valued at $14 billion. Menlo’s sustained involvement underscores the confidence major venture capital firms have placed in Anthropic’s long-term viability and market dominance.
Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, entered the Anthropic ecosystem more recently, making its first investment earlier this year. At that time, the company was valued at $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured it approximately 1% ownership in the firm. Despite the high entry valuation, this position has already more than doubled in value, reflecting the continued upward pressure on Anthropic’s stock price in the private market.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant stake in the company. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since injected an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake now worth billions of dollars. Notably, Kutcher departed from Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains intact.
Perhaps the most dramatic return on investment belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. Since then, that position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. This extraordinary growth rate highlights the premium placed on early access and governance influence within the leading AI laboratory.
The impending public listing is expected to formalize these gains, providing liquidity to investors who have held their positions for varying durations. From Eric Schmidt’s 2021 entry to Sequoia’s recent participation, the breadth of investor involvement demonstrates the broad appeal of Anthropic’s technology. As the company moves toward a valuation of up to $2 trillion, the financial landscape of the AI sector will be permanently altered, rewarding those who identified the company’s potential at each stage of its development.
