One spectator died and three others sustained injuries when a shooter opened fire at a youth football championship game in Madison, Illinois, on Sunday night. The incident occurred at Madison Senior High School at approximately 9:50 p.m. Although the venue is a public school, the game was not organized or sponsored by the district.

Emergency responders transported the three wounded individuals to local hospitals. The fourth victim did not survive the shooting and died at the scene. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has taken lead jurisdiction over the investigation. Officers are currently soliciting witnesses and anyone with relevant information to assist in identifying the shooter.

Lt. Andrew Pierson, the public information officer for the Major Case Squad, urged the public to report details, even if they seem minor. “You do not have to have the whole story, a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward,” Pierson said. He noted that someone in the crowd likely saw or recorded something useful.

The Madison School District canceled classes scheduled for Monday, with normal operations set to resume on Wednesday. In a statement, the district expressed that it “is deeply saddened by the shooting.” Officials acknowledged that although the event was external, “this violence affects our entire school community.” Counseling and support services will be available to students and staff during the interim.

Authorities have established a command post for the investigation. Individuals with information can reach the post by calling 618-709-7750 or by contacting CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477. The investigation remains active as officers review evidence from the scene.
