Audiences in the United Kingdom and Ireland chose a local ghost story over a major superhero release this weekend. Lionsgate U.K. released the horror-comedy "Ghosts: The Possession of Button House," which took the top spot at the box office. The film collected 2.4 million pounds, equivalent to 3.2 million dollars, during its opening three-day period.
Warner Bros.' DC thriller "Clayface" finished in second place with 2.6 million dollars. Amazon MGM Studios' comedy "Ali G: Who Iz I?" held the third position, earning 1.7 million dollars in its debut. Black Bear's animated fantasy "Wildwood" directed by Travis Knight, placed fourth with 1.36 million dollars.
Paramount's "Street Fighter" dropped to fifth after leading the previous week. It added 1.35 million dollars to reach a cumulative total of 5.6 million dollars. Universal's "Forgotten Island" sat in sixth with 1.2 million dollars, bringing its total to 3.7 million dollars. Sony's "Verity" ranked seventh in its fourth week, adding 857,067 dollars for a running total of 14.4 million dollars.
Universal's "Other Mommy" took eighth place with 576,822 dollars, lifting its gross to 6.2 million dollars. Mubi's drama "Fatherland" entered at ninth place. It generated 264,083 dollars from 86 locations over the weekend. This produced a per-screen average of 3,144 dollars, the fourth highest among new releases.
Including preview screenings, "Fatherland" opened with a total of 415,017 dollars. This figure surpassed "Cold War" to become director Paweł Pawlikowski's largest launch in the region. Studiocanal's animated film "Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom" closed the top 10 in its sixth week with 408,089 dollars, raising its cumulative total to 6.1 million dollars.
Mubi also opened the documentary "Making Marie Antoinette" on six screens. It took 1,737 dollars over the weekend for a total of 24,355 dollars. This limited release begins a staggered rollout ahead of Park Circus's re-release of Sofia Coppola's 2006 film on November 13. Mid-week event programming starts Tuesday with Trafalgar Releasing's broadcast of the Royal Ballet's "Manon."
Wednesday brings the music documentary "Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back to the Beginning" to over 100 locations. Wide commercial rollouts arrive Friday on more than 300 screens. These include Disney's "Everest: The Other Side," A24's "Primetime," and Black Bear's "Wicker." Other Friday releases include Universal's "I Love Boosters" and Action Xtreme's "Bad Day at the Office." The weekend concludes Saturday with Trafalgar's event presentation of "BTS World Tour 'Arirang' in Sao Paulo: Live Viewing."
