Ohio State Leads Big Ten Rankings Amid Quarterback Uncertainty
Injuries and upsets have left few clear favorites in the conference as Week 9 begins.

The Big Ten lacks a clear title contender entering Week 9. CBS Sports ranks Ohio State first and UCLA second, but notes that key injuries and recent upsets have created more uncertainty than confidence in the standings.
Ohio State sits at the top of the rankings, yet head coach Ryan Day has not decided between Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair for Saturday's game against USC. This matchup marks the Buckeyes' first test without Julian Sayin at quarterback. UCLA follows at second place, remaining unbeaten after a midseason adjustment. However, the Bruins' rushing attack has slowed since Nico Iamaleava was injured, forcing Ty Dieffenbach to secure two more victories through the air against Nevada this week.
Defensive strength defines the current power structure. Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan possess elite defensive units. UCLA also joins this group. Offense remains the weak point for several teams. Indiana holds fourth place after winning at Michigan, but the passing game remains inconsistent. Josh Hoover is viewed as a downgrade for the Hoosiers. The team faces Minnesota and USC in the coming weeks.
Wisconsin jumped from eighth to fifth following a 24-7 victory over USC on Saturday night. That result largely settled questions about Luke Fickell's future in Madison. The Badgers now travel to Iowa. Minnesota rose to sixth place after beating Iowa 13-10 to keep the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. That win relied on defense and special teams. Iowa, ranked seventh, faces Wisconsin and Northwestern in consecutive games.
Nebraska sits eighth after a bye week, following two straight losses that included a fourth-quarter collapse at Oregon. The Huskers host Washington and need a win to reach 6-2. USC is ninth at 6-2 after struggling at Wisconsin. The Trojans play at home against Ohio State this week and face Indiana and UCLA later in the season. Washington ranks 10th, while Purdue is 11th and visits Penn State.
Illinois moved from 14th to 12th after beating Oregon. The Fighting Illini travel to Maryland, which is under interim leadership. Oregon dropped from sixth to 13th following a poor performance in Champaign. Quarterback Dante Moore is out for the season with a concussion, leaving Dylan Raiola and Brock Thomas to manage the struggling offense. Michigan is 14th after losing to Indiana. Tommy Carr's offense could not overcome the issues, even though the defense played well.
Rutgers is 15th and hosts Michigan State, seeking a second conference win. Penn State ranks 16th under first-year coach Matt Campbell. The Nittany Lions need home wins to stay bowl eligible. Michigan State is 17th after a 28-10 loss at UCLA. Maryland is 18th, joining NC State and Baylor as Power Four programs that fired their head coaches this past weekend.
