Christa Pike reported on Friday that she has experienced constant pain every day since surviving a failed execution in Tennessee. The 50-year-old inmate stated that her body, arms, hands, and throat still hurt, and she continues to struggle with speaking.
Pike was scheduled for execution on September 30, 2026, for the 1995 stabbing death of her 19-year-old classmate, Colleen Slemmer. At the time of the crime, Pike was 18 years old and had been convicted alongside her boyfriend for torturing and killing Slemmer. This case made Pike one of the youngest women to receive a death sentence.
During the execution attempt, the state administered two doses of pentobarbital. Pike’s lawyers reported that the procedure left her with burned and blistered arms. She was unconscious and connected to a respirator during the first days of her hospitalization. Medical experts have suggested that a problem with the intravenous line may have caused the drug to accumulate in tissue rather than entering the bloodstream.
Following the incident, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an investigation into the failed execution. He also postponed another lethal injection scheduled by the state for this year. The state’s director of corrections resigned from his position.
Pike dictated her first public statement from the infirmary at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she is currently held. She expressed gratitude to the healthcare workers who saved her life. She also noted that she never expected to live past her scheduled execution date and was prepared to die in peace, only to wake up confused in a hospital bed.
Her legal team has asked Governor Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison. Lee told reporters this week that he suspects the sentence will remain the same unless the courts decide otherwise. Pike said she is focusing on healing one day at a time while holding onto the kindness shown to her by others.
The governor’s office confirmed the investigation is ongoing. Pike remains in the prison infirmary as she recovers from the physical and mental effects of the event.
