With the start of the school year and cold and flu season underway, it’s possible that kids may come home with runny noses, sore throats, and other ailments. While younger children tend to get sick more often, older children and teens face their own health risks, especially because they socialize in confined spaces and sometimes share drinks. CBS News Baltimore spoke with a MedStar Health expert about common illnesses among teens and college students, such as mononucleosis, strep throat, and skin infections. The doctor at MedStar Health said that illnesses like the flu should be taken seriously in children of all ages. ‘The flu could be one of those illnesses that makes the kids stay home for a few days,’ said Bazzano. ‘With the COVID, it’s the same. Strep throat should not be ignored either. Skin infections are also a concern. Mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, can cause sore throat, fever, and fatigue, but the most important thing is that sports should not be played because they can cause spleen injuries.’

Mono, commonly known as mono, can cause the enlargement of the spleen, which increases the risk of injury during physical activity. The symptoms may include fatigue, sore throat, and fever.
