The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday night to win their first World Series title in franchise history. The small-market team from the smallest major league city beat a fellow bottom-payroll opponent to claim the championship in the 58th season of the franchise.

Jacob Misiorowski pitched five and two-thirds scoreless innings before leaving the game with a calf cramp. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 86 pitches, 58 for strikes, and topped out at 103 mph. He allowed two hits and one run. Cooper Pratt, a rookie who debuted in June, recorded two hits and two RBIs. The 22-year-old set a Series rookie record with six straight hits before a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Christian Yelich, the team captain, said the win was the best feeling ever after the city waited a long time. Manager Pat Murphy called the group deserving of history because they cared about each other rather than individual stats. Principal owner Mark Attanasio told fans from the postgame stage that Milwaukee finally has its world championship after a 44-year wait.

The victory reverses the franchise’s previous World Series appearance in 1982. That team blew a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning of Game 7 to lose to the St. Louis Cardinals. The current squad finished with 103 wins in the regular season and 11-2 in the postseason. They included seven comeback wins and a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.

The Rays dropped to 0-3 in World Series history after previous defeats in 2008 and 2020. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only the Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers have lost their first three series appearances. The series featured low home run totals, with the teams hitting just four combined. The Brewers scored a major league-low 32.1% of their runs on home runs.

This championship arrives as owners push for a salary cap against the players' association. A management lockout is likely to start December 2 and could threaten the 2027 season. The Brewers ranked 19th in payroll as of August 31, while the Rays ranked 25th. This was the first Series since 1991 between teams in the bottom half of payrolls.
