Brighton and Hove Albion occupies third place in the Premier League standings with a goal difference of plus-16, a metric that currently leads the division. This position places the Seagulls just two points behind the league leaders, provided Manchester City does not gain ground in their upcoming fixtures. The club has secured the league's best attack and its third-best defense over the first eight matches of the 2026-27 season.

The team sits behind only Manchester City in goal difference, with the champions holding a plus-11 record. A win in the second of this week's doubleheader against Enzo Maresca's side would keep Brighton within striking distance of the top spot. However, Arsenal could potentially widen the gap during the same period. Brighton already holds a 3-0 victory over City from earlier in the season.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler maintained his side's momentum following a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. He noted that his team created the majority of the chances, citing seven shot blocks forced against Liverpool's side. The loss did not appear to shake the squad, as they continued to press and create high-value opportunities despite the result.

The squad's current form follows a summer of significant personnel changes. Brighton sold leading scorer Danny Welbeck, center back Jan Paul van Hecke, and midfielder Carlos Baleba. They replaced Van Hecke with Luka Vuskovic, a move that has proven successful. However, star wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh have yet to play this season due to injuries, removing two key creators from the lineup.

Hurzeler has adapted by shifting Maxim De Cuyper permanently to left back to provide attacking width. The integration of Charalampos Kostoulas and Diego Gomez has also stabilized the midfield. Pascal Gross, now 35, continues to contribute, with four assists and three goals in the league this season.

Pressing intensity remains a defining feature of the team. Brighton leads the league in passes per defensive action, allowing opponents an average of 7.6 passes before regaining possession. According to data from Gradient, Gross is in the 99th percentile for pressures leading to dangerous situations. This defensive structure helps limit the time opponents spend in possession.

The team leads the division in counterattacking goals, goals from corners, and shots from outside the box. However, the sample size remains small, and the data includes two matches where Brighton had a numerical advantage. Additionally, their 23 goals exceed their expected goals of 16.2, suggesting a variance in finishing that may not be sustainable.

Defensive vulnerabilities persist despite the strong goal difference. Brighton allows the third-highest expected goals per shot in the Premier League, with a rate of 0.117 from open play. This figure is 10% above the league average. The team also struggled against set pieces, a weakness that could be exploited by high-pressing opponents like Manchester City.

Manchester City faces Brighton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium. The match kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed on Paramount+. Manchester City is listed as the favorite with odds of -150, while Brighton is +320. A victory in this cup match would serve as a key indicator of the Seagulls' ability to compete with the league's elite.
