Visitors to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, now encounter amusement park attractions alongside the Formula 1 circuit. The permanent venue has expanded its grounds to include two swimming pools and multiple rollercoasters. These additions mark a shift from the facility's original 2012 layout, which featured open grassy banks and minimal non-racing infrastructure.
COTA is currently one of the most popular stops on the Formula 1 calendar. Unlike the temporary street circuits in Miami and Las Vegas, the Austin track is a dedicated facility with extensive run-off areas. It was designed by motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz, while Herman Tilke's firm handled the buildings and infrastructure. The course features varying corner speeds, heavy braking zones, and significant elevation changes.
The venue's hospitality areas have grown substantially. Structures now cover the grassy banks surrounding the track. One specific building connects to the main paddock via a cable car system. This area contains two swimming pools, offering a recreational space for attendees during race weekends.
The expansion reflects a broader diversification strategy for the venue. COTA now operates as a combination of a theme park, concert venue, and motorsport facility. This approach aims to attract visitors beyond the traditional racing audience. The site hosts other major events, including the World Endurance Championship and IMSA races, which typically take place in September.
The transformation of the site has been gradual since the first U.S. Grand Prix in 2012. Landscaping has increased, and the skyline now includes amusement rides. The venue continues to serve as a primary destination for dedicated Formula 1 fans among the three U.S. races.
