The Atlantic Coast Conference enters the final stretch of the regular season with a slate that defines the divisional hierarchy. On Saturday, the No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricanes travel to Chapel Hill to face the North Carolina Tar Heels in a matchup that could settle the conference power balance.
Miami enters the contest as the most efficient offensive unit in the Bowl Subdivision. The Hurricanes average 551.9 total yards and 49.0 points per game, figures that lead the entire country. Their attack relies heavily on the connection between quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney. Miami is 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, with their only non-blowout victories coming against Florida State and Wake Forest.
North Carolina presents a different challenge under Bill Belichick. In his second year as head coach, Belichick has built a program that prioritizes defensive stability over offensive explosiveness. The Tar Heels have not scored more than 27 points in regulation against any FBS opponent during Belichick's tenure. Their recent form is mixed, as they suffered an overtime loss to a Syracuse team that entered the game 0-4 in the league. North Carolina is 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
History favors the visitors in this specific pairing. North Carolina holds a 0-11 all-time record against the No. 1 ranked team. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on ABC.
In the other marquee conference matchup, the 4-4 Virginia Cavaliers visit the No. 14 Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Wake Forest is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. They are using this week to prepare for a pivotal home game against SMU on Nov. 14. Virginia has lost its last two games to SMU and Duke after a 4-2 start. The Cavaliers are currently 2-3 in conference play.
Clemson, which is 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference, travels to Tallahassee to face Florida State on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on the ACC Network. The Tigers lost at home to Virginia Tech last week, a result that dropped them down the standings. Florida State is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Seminoles had a bye last week after losing 43-35 to Miami on Oct. 17.
At N.C. State, the spotlight falls on quarterback CJ Bailey. The Wolfpack will host California on Saturday, their first game since the midseason firing of longtime coach Dave Doeren. Bailey is in his third year as the starting quarterback. He stated this week that his focus is on doing the next positive thing for the team. Interim coach Todd Goebbel will lead the staff, with Bailey and other key players tasked with stabilizing the roster.
Syracuse running back Ahmad Miller is carrying the offense for the Orange. Miller rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Louisville, then ran for 125 yards and another score in the overtime victory at North Carolina. He has carried the ball 48 times in the past two games. Quarterback Steve Angeli has played well upon his return to the starting lineup. Syracuse hosts SMU on Saturday.
Other notable trends in the conference involve Duke, Stanford, and Pittsburgh. Duke running back Nate Sheppard is no longer leading the nation in rushing, but he threw the winning touchdown pass against Virginia last week. He is set to play against Boston College on Saturday. Stanford has won all four of its games at home, including a victory over N.C. State that led to Doeren's departure. However, the Cardinal has scored only 17 total points in its three road losses and travels to Louisville on Saturday. Pittsburgh has not won since starting quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Panthers were 5-0 and ranked in the AP Top 25 before losing three straight. They host Georgia Tech on Saturday. Virginia Tech is idle this week.
