A long-standing question about Tesla's fully autonomous vehicle is finally resolved. The company is moving forward with plans to sell the Cybercab. Delivery to customers is scheduled for the end of 2026. This ends months of guessing about when the robotaxi would be available for purchase.
The timeline was shared during the third-quarter earnings call on October 21. Lars Moravy, Vice President of Engineering, addressed the matter directly. He stated, “We’re trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026.” Moravy explained that the assembly line at Gigafactory Texas is active. However, the units currently coming off that line are not for sale. They are going into Tesla's own internal Robotaxi fleet.
As the operation grows, the company plans to shift its focus. Moravy said Tesla will “mainly deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to our customers.” The Cybercab is the first vehicle designed for this specific purpose. The initial batch of cars sent to buyers will be small. The company wants to gain experience with delivery logistics and ownership models. They also need to manage fleets and operate autonomous vehicles outside their direct control.
CEO Elon Musk clarified the business model for the vehicle during the call. He described the Cybercab primarily as a “transport-as-a-service” offering. This is a shift away from personal ownership. He compared it to personal vehicles like the Model 3, Model Y, and the upcoming Roadster. Musk stated, “The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be Tesla-owned and transport-as-a-service.” This means the company plans to keep most of these units for its own fleet operations.
The Cybercab itself is a two-seater vehicle. It does not have a steering wheel or pedals. The design relies completely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite for navigation. Production on this specific vehicle began in February. Early units were added to the Robotaxi service in early September. At that time, the company launched rides to the public. Tesla previously indicated a target price of about $30,000 for the Cybercab.
There are still hurdles regarding the vehicle's operation. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI, provided details on software availability. He indicated that Unsupervised Full Self-Driving is expected to ship to consumer cars during the second quarter of 2027. This software timeline is a factor for early buyers and fleet operators. Some vehicles may be restricted due to lagging regulatory agencies in certain areas.
