Troy Clemons was walking back to his seat during the third quarter when his evening took a turn. LeBron James, chasing a loose ball, barreled past the basket and into the crowd. The impact sent Clemons' drink flying.
The collision occurred during the Philadelphia 76ers' 126-107 win against the Chicago Bulls on Monday. James' momentum carried him out of bounds. Clemons, a resident of Chestnut Hill, said he was not wearing a helmet or protective gear, just his usual clothes and a drink in hand.
James did not leave the fan standing. He grabbed the cup and took a sip. Clemons noted that the player hugged him and said, "My bad." The action was captured on video and spread across the internet within minutes of the game.
The beverage in question was wine. Clemons initially kept the contents secret, stating he did not want to get the star in trouble. James later confirmed the nature of the drink in a post-game interview. He explained that he wanted to test the quality since some had spilled on his arm.
"It was all right," James said regarding the taste. He viewed the incident as a way to find enjoyment in the grind of the 82-game season. The NBA veteran emphasized the importance of appreciating small moments with fans while maintaining a hard level of play.
Clemons has attended Sixers games for four decades, a history that stretches back to the Julius Erving era at the Spectrum. He said the current team has rejuvenated the local fanbase. He noted that the excitement level is returning to what it was during the Allen Iverson years.
The interaction lasted only a few seconds. Clemons said he was humbled by the moment but surprised by the reaction of the people around him. He felt the crowd was more excited than he was. He did not fully process what had happened until he looked around and saw the commotion.
James finished the game with 15 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds. He was smiling and celebrating with teammates throughout the contest. The brief stoppage to allow him back on the court marked a lighthearted interlude in an otherwise dominant performance by the home team.
