The Heisman Trophy race is no longer a foregone conclusion as the college football season enters Week 10. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who previously appeared to dominate the voting, now trails Miami quarterback Darian Mensah in betting markets. The shift reflects Miami's undefeated record and Smith's recent struggles to find consistency.
Mensah leads the nation in completion percentage and passing yards. He has thrown 25 touchdown passes with only one interception. Despite these strong numbers, critics note Miami has not yet faced a ranked opponent. This week's game at Notre Dame serves as a major test for the Hurricanes. A strong performance against a top-tier defense would solidify his claim to the award.
Smith remains a contender at odds of +290. He has gone three consecutive games without reaching 100 receiving yards. Ohio State now has two losses this season. Smith caught 10 passes for 83 yards in a loss to USC. He faces Oregon this week, a matchup that could help him regain favor with voters if he produces another high-volume performance.
Miami receiver Malachi Toney is also in the mix at +305. He had 194 receiving yards against Pittsburgh and scored two touchdowns at North Carolina. His season totals are similar to Smith's. However, his production often boosts Mensah's statistics. Voters may need to see Toney make plays that stand apart from his quarterback to distinguish his individual value.
Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr enters the week at +1150. The Irish are 7-1 and host Miami. Carr has protected the ball well but threw 49 passes without a touchdown against BYU. A victory over Miami would only elevate his stock if he performs significantly above that baseline. His current odds reflect a player who needs a breakout performance to jump into the top tier.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is another long shot at +1150. He has faced five opponents ranked at kickoff, a tougher slate than many other candidates. He delivered a strong performance against LSU but threw three interceptions at Texas. He plays Georgia this weekend followed by a trip to Oklahoma. A dominant showing against the Bulldogs would force voters to reconsider his position in the race.
