Aston Villa arrive at the Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday to face Barcelona in the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League. The English club holds a perfect record in the league phase, having won all three of their opening matches. They currently sit second in the standings, trailing only Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference.

The visitors have scored 12 goals in Europe this season. Their recent form includes a 6-0 home victory over Fenerbahce and a 3-1 win against Viking at Villa Park. Villa aims to replicate its 2024-25 campaign, when it reached the quarterfinals before falling to PSG. The club is owned by V Sports, a holding company controlled by Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, who completed their takeover in 2019.

Barcelona enters the fixture as a heavy favorite, despite a shaky start to its European campaign. The Spanish side sits eighth in the league phase table after a 4-2 loss to PSG. That defeat ended a perfect start in the competition, which had included wins over Feyenoord and Galatasaray. Domestically, Barcelona leads La Liga with 10 wins in 11 games, although it lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in its most recent league match.

The host team faces defensive challenges due to injuries to Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, and Xavi Espart. Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s head coach, noted that his side has not kept a clean sheet in 18 Champions League matches this season. Flick called the match a difficult one, stating that Villa is in great form and that Emery is one of the best coaches in Europe. He expressed confidence in his team’s ability to finish among the top eight in the league phase.

Aston Villa’s path to the Champions League began under Unai Emery, who took over in October 2022. After securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, Villa qualified for the competition for the first time in 41 years. The club has since won the Europa League, defeating Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul in May. Emery has faced Barcelona 30 times in his managerial career, recording only three wins against the Catalan side.

Opta supercomputer simulations predict Barcelona will win the match in 72.0% of scenarios. Villa has a 15.3% chance of securing a draw and a 12.7% chance of an upset victory. The teams have not met since the European Super Cup final in January 1983, when Villa won 3-1 on aggregate. Their most recent head-to-head encounter in all competitions was a 3-0 victory for Villa.

Injuries have affected both squads ahead of the kickoff at 20:00 GMT. Barcelona will start with Joan García in goal and Lamine Yamal on the wing, a player who has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions this season. Villa will field Zion Suzuki in goal and Nicolas Jackson up front. The match marks the first meeting between these two clubs since 1983, with both sides looking to advance their campaigns in the current European season.
